Stories from the Closet

Last week we finally attacked the dreaded closet.
You know ...the kind of closet that you are afraid to open
because you fear what will fall on you.
Our goal was to bag lots of coats and jackets for goodwill.
There also were many surprises...
The best surprise was after we managed to get to the end of the closet we found
where we had once began.

* our helping hands on deck
the princess with her game face on
the king ready for anything
These are some of the treasures we found
* one bag of old coats
* one acoustic guitar
* an orange recorder
captain busy doing some closet digging
* one very serious self-portrait of the captain

*one colorful box with sad neglected craft projects
I was happy to find this!

* one box the captain's 1980's old cassette tapes
the tapes on the left are the captain's band tapes
*one large box full of wedding memories
thank you cards never sent out
* the only picture of our engagement
The proposal was at Le Figaro Cafe, on my birthday, where we had our first date.
He had it planned down to the song they played and I was taken by total surprise.
Lucky to say that the captain still surprises me every day.

* a few legal pad pages with scribbles of the guest seating arrangements

* our guest book with some lovely wishes

* sweet drawings from the kids table

*our forgotten thank you cards
* one dried up corsage

* one postcard of our reception venue at Bear Mountain Inn.

* one affidavit and mugshot
ok I'll explain..
With all the excitement of an awesome party, we ended up exhausted ... but could not sleep
because we had to rush to the airport to a 4 am flight to St. Lucia.
Failing to double check my bag, I got to the line and realized.......I forgot to bring my photo ID !!!
Picture this: a new bride balling her eyes out while waving her marriage certificate. ( it wasn't pretty)
The plane was about to leave so they rushed to take a polaroid of me and stuck it on an affidavit and they said "do not lose this or you may never return!, ok now, RUN!!!!".... they held the plane and took any two empty seats. It has been an adventure ever since.
notice my puffy face, trying to hold it together
* one brochure from our unforgettable tropical honeymoon.

* an old photo in our dating days (my favorite treasure find)
This was taken in our one room apartment on 17th street with only one huge window to the outside world. A tiny sink only big enough to wash our hands. A mattress on the floor, a TV on a stereo speaker, a toaster oven on the only dresser and a toilet and shower shared with the neighbors (yuk!).
It was the best of times...and still is.

What's inside your closets? What stories do they tell?

  1. I love this post! What great finds, I bet you're wondering why you left tackling the closet so long! There is nothing so exciting in mine - mostly yarn, fabric, and old cameras! I love your engagement photo :)

    1. If I had yarn, fabric and old cameras in mine I would go into it more often. I will have a new place with a lot more space so this won't be happening again. In a city apartment closets become storage after awhile. I was nice to relive these moments again. That engagement photo was a nice surprise ;)
