Return of the King

One of my favorite things to do is to unpack someone else's bag after a long adventure trip. Pretend you don't know them and see if you can figure them out by the treasures they carry around. I loved to do this with my mother's bags as a kid. So naturally when the king returned after his month long adventure I could not wait to dig into his bag of treasures to see what clues I would find. Something new I did not know about him perhaps...
1 pocket video camera/camera
1 hawaiian tiki... he later revealed to me it was the " love " tiki
1 pair of worn flip flops... he refuses to part with
1 pair of headphones... "air traffic controller huge", his favorite ones
1 pair of goggles
1 kindle
1 volcano guide ... an amazing book
1 ukelele... he later played for me a Jason Mraz song and blew me away
2 maze maps... at the Dole plantation they have the world's largest maze
1 sudoku book and another brain teaser book
1 baggie filled with chai and green tea bags
2 books ... his favorite author Orson Scott Card and Haruki Murakami a new favorite
1 mad hatter hat...for proper adventuring of course

The king returned wiser, older and chock full of stories. He is also sporting an envious tan and a hint of a deeper voice. Lulu could not get enough of her big brother , showing off what he had missed and all the stuff she had learned. Her tickle monster was back and she could not be happier.

Watching them play together this time seemed like the 8 year difference was no longer there.
He took out a special gift that he got for each of us. He got me a beautiful luminecent fresh water pearl on a single silver strand. A beautiful flower hair clip for his sister . Both of us have refused to part without his gifts since. One thing I can't wait, is to take a taste of the strong coffee he got for the captain and I fresh from the plantation.
One of the first things he did when he came back was plan his next trip to Hawaii. He wishes to return to do the longer hike that would take over a week to reach the summit. He does not talk about it like its just something on his bucket list but something that he is destined to do. We watched the video of his helicopter ride in awe. We all could see why this place took such a hold on him, it is truly a magical island.
I see many travels in his future. I just hope this wanderlust boy still lets me open up his travel bag to find more treasures from his bag.

  3. What an amazing trip this must have been. Sounds like he had a wonderful time. I have acquaintances that went to Hawaii for their honeymoon and have pretty much been back every year since. They fell in love with it and want to retire there... I guess, it takes a hold of you.

  10. What a treasure. I mean, of course, that he is brave and bold to go into the world. And you are a treasure for letting him. I love the game of revealing character through unpacking. I'll try that next time Dot goes somewhere!
