A space to create, breathe, regroup, and regenerate.
For the captain it was taken away once the princess and king were born.
Naturally, priorities for them took over our small space in Brooklyn.
One of the biggest reasons to move was so he could have this space again.
Having a shed in our new home was a plus and dream come true for him.
His first project was based on the need of storage for our many books.
In our Brooklyn apartment the captain had constructed built in bookcases into the walls.
Books need to have a home on my walls even if they have all been read.
Some books are meant to be read again and again.
“Of course anyone who truly loves books buys more of them than he or she can hope to read in one fleeting lifetime. A good book, resting unopened in its slot on a shelf, full of majestic potentiality, is the most comforting sort of intellectual wallpaper.”
He had dreams of making a much fancier one, but settled on a basic one for now.
To me it is a real masterpiece in its simplicity.
Even though it did not make a dent in our vast book collection ...
it makes the room feel more like home.
when my cousin asked him to create part of her vision for her fortieth birthday party celebration.
Eager to create he did not hesitate.
With some colorful scrap pieces that were gifted to the captain he went to work in the shed.
The first part came together quick.
He created this outdoor table with handy detachable legs for easy storage.
The pergola was the second part...which took less than two weeks to make.
The finished piece was truly magical... at her poolside.
I contributed by making some paper flowers as decoration.
All the pieces came together to make a really special night.
We were both so happy to have been a part of it.
Having a space for the captain to create has been his salvation here.
Being without it for so long can make anyone unhappy.
It easy here in the south, to let your mind wander creatively.
So I asked him...what does it mean to you to have this space?
He said : to able to leave his comfort zone, to take risks, to be challenged creatively is great problem solving, to take the liberty to follow his intuition and discover who he is in the process.
The next project will include pallet boards...Stela's post of her coffee table was a true inspiration.
Do you have a space to create?
Wonderfully written and inspirational.

DeleteLovely, i'm impressed, you have a handy captain in there, the pergola looks amazing...A space of your own to create, read, hang around is SO vital... I absolutely need a space of my own, I have a little studio, it's not what I'm really wishing for but it's ok for the moment, at least is my very own studio, I spend most of the day in here...
ReplyDeleteYeah he is much happier with having a space to create. I am working on my space now. Hope to reveal it soon. The captain will be helping me by making cubbies for my yarn stash.
DeleteI would spend most of the day there too.

DeleteThe shelf, the table, and the pergola all look excellently done, Alma! Captain has such good craftsmanship skills. You know, some days, you can put a foam bed in white sheets under the pergola. It would be romantic and would go well with the sheer curtains hanging on the sides. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy! The pergola was made as a gift, but yes if it were mine that would be a romantic option. :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by !
Love the pictures and how creative your whole family is.
ReplyDeleteWe did some renos earlier this year, moved our bedroom into the basement and since April I have my own office space. I painted it in a colour I love and bought a gorgeous desk. So happy about that.
(Also so happy to have connected with you!)
